You have probably felt it. You are still the same you, doing more or less the same things, the people around you unchanged, and yet in one particular year the days are dyed an entirely different color. The ancients placed this experience — the same person, lit as if by a different light from year to year — beneath the word liunian.

What is Liunian?

Liunian is often read as "is this year lucky or not," as if it were scoring each year. But its truest part is not good or bad fortune — it is light. The same person, struck by one year's light, shows up looking quite different.

This is far too common to need explaining: you are still you, your ability, your character, your circumstances barely shifted, and yet in one year you are seen everywhere, opportunities arriving as if they had made an appointment; in another year, the very same you meets resistance at every turn, even opening your mouth risks an awkward silence. What liunian corresponds to is this layer of "this year's light" — it does not change you, it only lays a year's tint over you, so that the same you reveals a different face. It is not saying you have become someone else; it is saying: you happen to be walking in a certain year, in a particular light. Some call it "offending Tai Sui" and panic, but really that is just the ancients' way of saying "this year the light falls a little off" — whether you panic was never about the year, it is about how you receive that off-angled light.

Why some years always feel "more"

People always remember certain years with unusual clarity, not because the most happened in them, but because that year's light fell on them in a different way.

In a favorable liunian, everything you do seems held up from beneath, and even your mistakes become endearing flaws. In a difficult liunian, everything seems narrowed, and even what should have gone smoothly gains a few extra thresholds. This "more" is not you having become a different sort of person — it is the tint laid over you that year being denser or lighter. Understand this, and a lot of the fixation on years loosens: you did not suddenly turn good or bad in some year, you were simply walking in that year's particular light. Liunian records the light, not you. A colleague told me she could not recall anything major she had done one year, only that the whole year was gray, and she could not even be bothered with her own birthday; then the very next year she came alive again, started learning things, made friends. Asked whether she herself had changed across those two years, she said "no, still me" — what changed was the layer of light laid over her.

Its shape: superposition, not overwrite

Liunian is most easily misunderstood as "this year rewrote the whole of you." But the experience it describes is superposition, not overwrite.

It does not erase what you have accumulated, nor does it replace you as a person; it only layers a year's color on top of you. So you see: a steady person, suddenly careless in one liunian; an impulsive person, suddenly quiet in another. Not because they changed, but because that year's light lit one side of them more brightly. The tenderness of liunian is here — it was never "who you became," only "which side of you got lit this year." You remain the whole of you, only this year you were struck by another kind of light. So it will not zero out what you have saved up, nor swap you for someone else: an introvert in some year is only "willing to come out once in a while," not suddenly a social butterfly; an extrovert in some year is only "wanting to hide a bit," not a personality reversal.

What you experience in a liunian that feels like friction

A difficult liunian, in experience, is not some great disaster, but a bodily sense of "the gaps between the teeth narrowing": plans easily fall through, relationships easily tighten, things that used to be easy start to catch. You have not gotten worse — that year's light simply narrowed your room.

This is when people most easily make two mistakes. One is inflating a year's friction into a verdict on the whole of themselves — "how did I end up like this over these years." The other is rushing to force a charge through the difficult year, wanting to tear that gray layer open with brute strength, only to hit harder. What liunian reminds us is: some years were never meant to be "charged through," they are meant to be "endured slowly." That narrowness is the limit this year gives you, not your lifelong measure. You need not use one year's light to measure your whole life. So the most avoidable thing in a difficult year is translating "everything goes wrong this year" into "I am just no good" — you are only walking a narrower road this year, you can still get through by turning sideways, and once the light shifts, that narrowness widens back.

How to keep company with it

Treating a given year as "this year's weather" rather than "my fate this year" is the least tiring way to keep company with liunian.

In a good year, don't overdraw. That fine light is tempting, but it is the climate of the year, not your permanent dividend; using the light to build substance into things is steadier than busying yourself enjoying "I'm really something this year." In a hard year, don't rush to conclusions. Allow yourself a year that is meant for drawing in, for nourishing, for making fewer decisions. The year will pass, and you are the continuous person — don't let any one year's light rewrite your whole judgment of yourself. You merely show up differently in different years. In a good year don't float up believing yourself capable of anything; in a hard year don't sink down believing yourself finished; take a given year as a seasonal coat — wear it well when it fits, and when it doesn't, know it will be changed, and that you yourself have not changed. The light the years give has its dense and its thin, but shining and shining, it is always shining on the same you. Just live a year as a seasonal coat, and don't use it to define the person wearing it.

The comfort liunian offers is actually quite light: the years flow, and you are the one who stays continuous.

So there is no need, because one year blazed especially bright, to feel you have suddenly reached the summit; nor, because one year went especially dark, to feel you have sunk to the bottom. The most considerate thing about the word liunian is that it remembers for us — every year's light is only that year's light, you are still you, only in a different light you show a different face. Next year the light will shift, and you will still be the continuous you. It is like how some are always especially cautious in their benming year, afraid not of the year itself but of that year's light falling askew; yet a light falling askew was never you leaning crooked.
