In BaZi, Liu Yue describes the month-by-month layer beneath the annual cycle. It helps explain why one month can feel smoother or more difficult than another, even within the same year. This is not a prediction that a month will determine your fate; it is a warm, non-predictive lens for noticing monthly timing while remembering that you remain the continuous person underneath it.

You have probably felt this puzzle before: the whole year is going more or less fine, yet for one or two months everything snags, and even things that should have gone smoothly pick up a few extra bends; the other way around, there are also months where everything falls into your hands, as if those thirty days were quietly tuned smooth. The ancients placed this experience — "within the same year, different months as if swapped to a finer layer of light" — under the word Liuyue.

What is Liuyue?

Liuyue is often treated as "is this month lucky or not," as if it were grading each month. But its truest part is not fortune or misfortune — it is closeness. The year's flow gives the broad light of a year; Liuyue gives the closer, finer, more frequently undulating qi of the current month. It wraps around you through those thirty days, nearer than the year's light.

This experience is ordinary: you are still you, the year's scenery unchanged, yet in some month you are especially prone to fatigue, especially prone to friction with people; in another month, the same situation, and you are much more at ease. What Liuyue corresponds to is this layer of "the month's small climate" — it does not change the main tone of your year, it only, within some thirty days, wraps you in a more concrete, more intimate layer of qi. It is not that you changed this month; it is that you happen to be walking through a certain stretch of the year, covered by that month's finer light for thirty days. You think your state is rising and falling, but much of the time, it is that month's layer of qi that is shifting.

Why We Often Only See "This Month Was Weird" at Month's End

People always, at month's end, at the moment of flipping the calendar, suddenly realize "how did this month pass so awkwardly." Yet while living inside it, you do not feel yourself changing — you just assume your own state is poor, or things merely happened to pile up.

Liuyue's experience hides this delay and this density: it is far shorter than the year, its ups and downs come fast and close, and you often have to wait until this layer of qi recedes, looking back to see clearly "oh, those thirty days were covered that way." A colleague told me that for one month she quarreled with her husband almost every day, and felt her marriage had a serious problem; once that month passed, the two were fine again, and she realized — it was not the relationship collapsing, it was that that month she was wrapped in a layer of especially combustible qi, and everything she touched caught fire. What Liuyue records is that month's intimate qi, not the truth of your relationship. This is also why people most want to look back at "the seam between months" — because that is the first time you can see the whole just-past month, and the first time you admit: those thirty days really did cover you that way.

Its Shape: Undulations Denser Than the Year, Steadier Than the Day

Liuyue is most easily mistaken for "a short version of the year's flow." But its experience lies between the year and the day: denser than the year, steadier than the day. It does not change day by day the way the day's flow does, nor does it swap the whole sky only once a year the way the year's flow does; it comes layer by layer, at the rhythm of "the month."

So you will see: within an overall smooth year, one or two especially awkward months are tucked in; within an overall heavy year, one or two months suddenly turn clear now and then. Liuyue's gentleness lies here — it reminds you that the year is the broad board and the month is the fluctuation; when the broad board trends well, it still makes room for one or two awkward months; when the broad board is heavy, it cannot block some month from turning clear. You did not suddenly change in some month; you are simply being wrapped by that month's finer qi, living those thirty days. Like the sea — the year is the great tide, the month is the wave; waves rise and fall, yet the sea's overall height is another matter. You think you have not changed, but actually those thirty days' waves are either buoying you or slapping you.

In the Month That Feels "Awkward," How Do People Tend to Be

An adverse Liuyue, in experience, is not anything major, but a kind of "nearby abrasion": plans always fall short by a breath, relationships always miss the right heat, things that used to go smoothly start snagging frequently. You have not gotten worse; that month's qi simply narrowed the room you had that month.

This is when people most easily make a mistake: magnifying one month's awkwardness into a denial of the whole year, even of themselves — "is my year just over," "am I just no good." Yet what Liuyue reminds is this: some months were never meant to be "pushed through," but "slowly endured." That narrowness is the limit those thirty days give you, not your lifelong measure. You need not use one month's light to measure your whole life. I have seen someone, in a stretch of awkward Liuyue, insist on pushing forward everything he had been dragging; the more he pushed the more it snagged, the more it snagged the more anxious he grew; once that month passed, he found those matters were not actually that urgent — it was himself panicked by that month's layer of qi. He later laughed and said those thirty days were like being covered in a layer of frosted glass: you could see the road, you just could not take big steps.

How to Keep Company With It

Treating some month as "the intimate weather of this stretch of days," rather than "my destiny this month," is the least tiring way to keep company with Liuyue.

In months that feel smooth, do not float. That thirty days' good light is tempting, but it is the month's climate, not your permanent dividend; while the wind and sun are fair, doing things solidly lasts longer than busily enjoying "I'm really doing great this month." In months that feel awkward, also do not rush to conclude things about yourself. Allow yourself to have a month that is simply for drawing in, for nourishing, for making fewer decisions. Months turn, and you are the continuous one — do not let any one month's more intimate layer of qi rewrite all your judgments about yourself. In smooth months, do not overspend or rush to expand, thinking yourself omnipotent; in awkward months, do not rush to "save yourself" or chaotically switch careers, and end up losing your capital. What is truly steady is this: leave some room when things go with the flow, protect the roots when things twist — knowing this is only this month, not this life. You simply, in different months, show different looseness and tightness.

The comfort Liuyue gives is actually very light: months flow, and you are the one who continues, unbroken.

So there is no need, because some month is especially awkward, to feel you suddenly collapsed; nor, because some month is especially smooth, to feel you have reached the summit. The most considerate part of the word Liuyue is that it remembers for us — each month's qi is only that month's qi; you are still you, just in different months, wrapped into layers of different tightness. Next month, the qi will change, and you will still be that continuous you. Like someone who always feels especially low in some fixed month each year, and later understood it was only that month's layer of qi being off; the qi being off was never you being crooked.
